Market Strategy for Japan Through Beauty Routines by Generation

The beauty routines of Japanese women show clear differences by age group, and these differences are expected to serve as key indicators for Korean cosmetics brands seeking to enter the Japanese market. According to a recently released beauty trend report, teens and women in their 20s focus on lightweight hydration care and dimensional makeup, while women in their 40s and 50s place greater emphasis on well-aging care centered on moisture and anti-aging. This survey was conducted among 1,000 women aged 15 to 59 living in Japan.

Skincare Routines Expanding by Age Group

Japanese women use an average of about 2.88 skincare products, showing a relatively simple routine. The most commonly used items were toner and emulsion. Teens and women in their 20s prefer lightweight textures, and they show higher usage of hydrating toner pads and mists compared with other generations.

Starting in their 30s, interest in skin elasticity and early aging care begins to grow in earnest, leading to a noticeable increase in the use of serums and ampoules. Consumers in their 40s show the highest usage rate of boosting essences that support nutrient absorption, and as signs of skin aging become more visible, their routines become increasingly segmented. Women in their 50s tend to focus strongly on moisture and barrier strengthening rather than using multiple layers of functional products.

An interesting point is that generational differences appear in morning skincare practice rates. In the evening, all age groups show a practice rate of over 90%, but morning care shows a large gap between teens (68.1%) and women in their 50s (95.6%). This indicates that as age increases, the habit of practicing a more structured skincare routine becomes more established.

Differences in Makeup and Beauty Procedures

The average number of makeup products used is 5.75, and younger consumers enjoy more detailed makeup by using a wider variety of products. Teens and women in their 20s actively use various color cosmetics such as blush, highlighter, and concealer to emphasize facial dimension and vitality.

In contrast, women in their 40s and 50s place more emphasis on base makeup and refining facial features than color makeup. Women in their 50s show high usage rates of foundation, eyebrow products, and lipstick, preferring to create a neat and defined impression. In the field of beauty procedures, generational strategies are also clearly divided. Women in their 40s show strong interest in hair removal and blemish removal, while women in their 50s are relatively more likely to choose proactive anti-aging procedures such as Fraxel laser or Botox.

K-Beauty Spreading Among Younger Generations

Awareness of Korean cosmetics brands in the Japanese market remains a challenge to be addressed. More than 70% of survey respondents said they did not yet recognize any Korean brands. However, among those who have actually used Korean products, Korean cosmetics have established themselves as synonymous with cost-effectiveness and high efficiency.

In particular, interest in Korean brands is rising rapidly among teens and women in their 30s, making the strategy of securing first-time users a key factor for successful market establishment. As everyday contact points such as drugstores and convenience stores expand, Korean cosmetics are quickly becoming lifestyle-connected brands in the daily lives of Japanese consumers.

In fact, as of the first quarter of this year, Korea became Japan’s largest cosmetics import partner. This proves that beyond the popularity of Korean Wave content, the actual quality and efficacy of products have earned the trust of Japanese consumers. Going forward, a two-track approach that maintains the curiosity of younger consumers while targeting the functional needs of middle-aged and older consumers is expected to drive the continued success of K-Beauty.
